Overview
An Ethernet 241 device may stop responding after remaining idle for one or more days. Users may hear the card reader beep, but the connected printer does not wake or release the print job. Power-cycling the Ethernet 241 may restore operation temporarily.
Symptoms
- The Ethernet 241 has been idle for approximately 72 hours or longer.
- A badge tap produces a reader beep, but the printer does not wake or respond.
- No corresponding activity appears in the Ethernet 241 log.
- The card reader may stop producing a beep.
- The USB port remains solid green after the reader is disconnected.
- The Ethernet 241 web interface becomes inaccessible.
- The device may remain pingable but is not discovered by the Discovery and Deployment Utility.
- Power-cycling the device restores the web interface, badge logging, and print release.
Resolution
- When the failure occurs, record the approximate idle duration, Ethernet 241 IP address, firmware version, connected printer model, Collector configuration, and exact time of failure.
- Before rebooting, collect the available Ethernet 241 device logs and Discovery and Deployment Utility logs. The Blueprint deployment guide identifies the DDU application log and the Ethernet 241 web interface logs as relevant diagnostic locations.
- Power-cycle the Ethernet 241 device.
- After the device restarts, verify that:
- The Ethernet 241 web interface is accessible.
- Badge activity appears in the device log.
- The printer responds to authentication.
- A test print job releases successfully. - If the issue recurs, escalate with the collected logs, firmware version, Blueprint version, network layout, printer model, and timestamps. Treat the power cycle as a temporary recovery, not a confirmed permanent fix.
Notes
- Confirm the exact Blueprint build before applying this article to other deployments.
- Do not generalize this behavior to all HP printers or all Ethernet 241 firmware versions.
