How do I connect a magnetic card swipe reader using a HP Jet Direct connectivity card?
The following components are required for this solution:
HP jetdirect connectivity card (HP part #J4135A)
Magtek RS-232 card swipe (Magtek part #21040082)
DB9/Male – DB9/Male Null Modem converter
This solution provides a method for interfacing a magnetic card swipe reader to an HP iMFP for authentication. A serial card swipe is connected to the serial port of the jetdirect card and is then available for card swipe authentication. Because both the card swipe and jetdirect serial connectors are DB9/Female a Male-Male Null Modem converter is required to make the connection.
This solution is not required and provides a connectivity option of card swipe interface. For HP printers that directly support a USB host device (such as the HP Color LaserJet 4730mfp) a USB card swipe can be connected directly to the MFP. The Pharos Card Connect Kit can be used to connect a serial card swipe to the parallel port of any HP printer.
Installation and Configuration
The jetdirect card should use the factory default settings with SW1 – SW6 in the on position. Installation should be performed as follows:
Install the jetdirect card in the printer as described in the HP documentation.
Power on the printer.
Connect the Null Modem converter to the DB9/Female connector on the jetdirect card.
Connect the DB9/Female connector of the serial card swipe to the Null Modem converter.
At that time the following should occur:
The light on the card swipe should illuminate.
A single page should print on the MFP with the serial number of the card swipe.
If the light does not illuminate or the test page does not print then the jetdirect card is not configured correctly or the card swipe is not correctly connected.
At this point the card swipe will function with the Pharos iMFP software in a normal manner. Refer to the Pharos documentation to configure the terminal for operation with a card swipe.
