Print Scout Improvements

Print Scout 8.4 for Windows and Mac Scout 2.32 include updates for offline printing, passcodes, encryption key handling, installer and uninstaller workflows, driver support, and platform reliability.

Windows and macOS

  • Improved passcode notification behavior - Organizations using 15-minute passcodes no longer get expired-passcode notifications, reducing confusion and unnecessary helpdesk requests.

  • Customer managed encryption keys (EKM) updates - EKM now supports key caching and key rotation, with clearer messaging for fail-open versus fail-close scenarios when keys are inaccessible.

    • In fail-open mode, if the customer-managed key is unavailable, new jobs continue to be encrypted using a Pharos-managed key. Print data is never stored unencrypted; however, the additional EKM protection provided by the customer-managed key is temporarily unavailable.

    • In fail-close mode, job submission and release are blocked until the customer-managed key becomes available. Users see a clear error message, and jobs encrypted with the unavailable key are hidden from the job list.

EKM in Preview Mode
Customer-managed encryption keys (EKM) remain in Preview mode.  Functionality and configuration may change before general availability.

Windows

  •  HP Universal Print Driver bundled - The Windows Print Scout installer now bundles HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) 8.2, replacing the previous version 7.9. This update brings compatibility with the latest HP printing technology, improves stability, and resolves known issues from earlier driver versions.

Note: This is most relevant if your organization uses custom HP manufacturer drivers. New print queues default to the IPP driver; existing queues keep their configured driver type after upgrade.

  • Modernized tray app and interface. The Print Scout UI has been rebuilt on a modern foundation with a more reliable internal communication model and correct dark/light theme detection, improving stability across Windows 10, 11, and Server.

macOS

  • Updated uninstaller workflow - The Mac Print Scout uninstaller has been renamed from "Uninstall" to "Print Scout Uninstaller" for clarity, and now runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Print Scout Bug Fixes

Windows and macOS

  • Fixed delayed Data Privacy Region propagation - Updates to data privacy regions now take effect in about a minute instead of up to 12 hours, so administrators see changes reflected almost immediately.

  •  Resolved the following passcode-related issues

    • Masked passcode no longer shown to existing users. The passcode window previously appeared with a masked value (*******) for users who already had a passcode. It now only appears when a passcode is freshly auto-created and the unmasked value is available to display.

    • Fixed duplicate passcode creation during login for users who already had an existing passcode.

    • Passcode no longer resets on shared workstations. Signing in to a new or shared workstation no longer resets a user's existing passcode; passcode state is correctly fetched from the server and kept separate between users.

  • Improved Offline Print experience - Offline mode now reliably shows and releases held jobs.

    • Offline jobs and printers now appear. When the cloud is unreachable, the Offline Print tab reliably shows held jobs and recently used printers. Earlier builds could show "No documents" even when jobs and printers were cached locally; the tray and the local service now agree on offline state and the interface reads jobs directly from the service.

    • The list refreshes after release. Once an offline job is released, it disappears from the list and the tab updates, with no need to close and reopen the tray.

    • Online and offline jobs stay separate. Unreleased online jobs no longer appear in the offline view, and offline jobs no longer appear online.

macOS

  • Fixed duplex handling - Duplex output on the custom Mac driver has been fixed (originally reported on Toshiba devices), along with the related color-mode, paper-size, and stapling attributes that share the same processing path.
