What to expect when upgrading to macOS 27

Applies to: Print Scout for Mac | Pharos Cloud

Overview

Users who upgrade a Mac from macOS 26 to macOS 27 will notice that the Pharos Print Scout stops working. This is expected, and it isn't a Pharos Cloud outage or configuration issue. MacOS 27 removes Rosetta by default, and some Mac Print Scout components currently require Rosetta to run. Once Rosetta is installed, Print Scout resumes working exactly as it did on macOS 26. No Pharos update is required.

Root Cause

The Print Scout includes a set of Intel-based components that run under Rosetta translation on Apple Silicon Macs. Starting with macOS 27, Rosetta is no longer installed automatically, so these components can no longer launch until Rosetta is added back manually. Apple has also announced that Rosetta support for Intel-based apps will end entirely in macOS 28. MacOS 27 still supports it, it simply isn't preinstalled. The affected components are:

  • BlueprintPrintConsole

  • JobSender

  • Print Scout Configuration

  • Print Scout Uninstaller (v2.31 or earlier)

Because JobSender can no longer run, the broader Pharos Print service has no way to process jobs, which is what users experience as the app being disabled.

What users will see

The menu bar icon shows "Service isn't ready"

The Pharos Print icon remains in the menu bar but is grayed out. Clicking it shows only “Service isn’t ready” and a Quit option. No print controls are available. This is caused by JobSender failing to launch.

"Support Ending for Intel-based Apps" notice appears in System Settings

Under System Settings > General > About, a new “Intel-based Apps” entry appears, warning that support for Intel-based apps running under Rosetta will end in macOS 28. Rosetta itself is still supported in macOS 27, just not preinstalled. Clicking Details lists the affected apps, including all impacted Print Scout components: BlueprintPrintConsole, JobSender, Print Scout Configuration, and Print Scout Uninstaller.

Pharos Print doesn't start automatically after a restart

After restarting the Mac, Pharos Print no longer launches automatically and does not appear in the menu bar. Opening the app manually will bring the icon back to the menu bar, but it will still be disabled, showing the same “Service isn’t ready” state described above.

Resolution: install Rosetta

Print Scout does not require a new build to work on macOS 27. Installing Rosetta resolves the issue. There are two ways to install it.

Option 1: Let the app prompt for Rosetta

Opening the Print Scout Configuration app triggers a macOS system prompt titled “To use Intel-based apps, you will need to install Rosetta.” Clicking Install downloads and installs Rosetta automatically.

The challenge with this method is that the Print Scout Configuration app isn't easily accessible. It's located inside a nested system folder rather than the Applications folder or Launchpad:

/Library/Application Support/Pharos/PrintScout/Print Scout Configuration.app

Users or IT staff will need to navigate to this path directly (for example, via Finder's Go > Go to Folder) and double-click the app to trigger the prompt.

Rosetta can be installed silently, without locating the app, by running the following command in Terminal:

/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

This is the more reliable option for IT teams rolling out macOS 27 across multiple Macs, since it can be scripted or pushed via MDM ahead of time.

Once Rosetta is installed by either method, Print Scout returns to normal: the menu bar icon becomes active, the “Service isn't ready” message clears, and the app resumes launching automatically on restart.

  • Hold off on upgrading to macOS 27 until Mac Print Scout 3.0 is released. Mac Print Scout 3.0 will have no dependencies on Rosetta.

  • If the Print Scout shows “Service isn't ready” after upgrading to macOS 27, install Rosetta using either method above. No Pharos update is required.

  • IT teams deploying macOS 27 at scale should proactively run the Terminal install command as part of the upgrade process, rather than relying on end users to install it.

  • Contact Pharos Support if Print Scout remains disabled after Rosetta is installed and confirmed.
