HP Integrated Printer Readiness Guide
This document covers the printer pre-requisites to deploy Sentry Print Services to an HP integrated printer. An HP integrated printer requires a color touchscreen control panel operating on FutureSmart bundle version 4.11 (or newer) or version 5.x is compatible.
The list of supported HP printer models are listed here on the Pharos website: https://www.pharos.com/partners/hp/#supported-devices
Terms Used In This Document
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Pharos Cloud Endpoint | Public API endpoints (URLs) hosted in Pharos Cloud: |
Cloud Connector | MFP application server (Site Service) is hosted in Pharos Cloud |
Local Connector | Pharos Systems Sentry Print Service (Site Service) is hosted on an always-on local Windows server running the Pharos Device Scout software |
Device Scout FQDN | Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is the Pharos Device Scout’s hostname and full domain suffix Example: devicescout.demo.local |
Device Preparation
Disable Skip Disk Load (Rarely required)
The Skip Disk Load startup option is generally not enabled but can sometimes be accidentally left enabled after a technician performs repair on a printer. These steps should be followed if a printer is exhibiting incorrect operation after securing the printer. An example of incorrect operation created by the Skip Disk Load option is the absence of the Sentry Print kiosk app running on the printer’s LCD screen.
Reboot printer
Touch the HP logo on the LCD panel when it first appears (step 1 of 8)
Select 3: Administrator > 8: Start Up Options
Deselect the checkbox (remove the X) for “3: Skip Disk Load”
Select the Back button three times to return to the main menu
Select Continue
Reset Firmware (Recommended if a previous print management solution was installed)
While this procedure is considered optional for most situations, it is highly recommended for printers that have been previous managed under alternate MPS solutions. The reset firmware procedure will remove all 3rd party software and custom configuration settings, returning the printer to a known good, clean state.
Select General > Reset Factory Settings
Scroll to the “Reset Firmware” section
Click the Reset button
Click the Reset button (again) at the Confirmation Page
Update Device Firmware (When required)
Open https://[device] in a web browser
Select Troubleshooting > Firmware Upgrade
Scroll to the Current Firmware Information section
Verify the firmware bundle is version 4.11 (or newer) or version 5.x
Download the latest firmware from the HP support website (if necessary)
Scroll to the Install New Firmware section
Click the Choose File button
Select the HP firmware file (BDL file)
Click the Install button
Be patient while the firmware is installed (it may take up to 15 minutes)
Set Administrator Password (Required)
Select Security > General Security
Scroll to the Set the Local Administrator Password section
Set a secure password
Sentry Print Services is compatible with HP’s Secure by Default initiative
Click the Apply button
Configure TCP/IP (Required)
Select Networking > TCP/IP Settings > TCP/IP(v4) (tab)
Select or enter the appropriate network information
Click the Apply button
Configure DNS (Required)
Select Networking > TCP/IP Settings > Network Identification (tab)
Scroll to the Enabled Features section
Enter the primary and secondary DNS (IPv4) addresses
DNS must resolve the Beacon Cloud API endpoints when using the Cloud Connector
DNS must resolve the Device Scout fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and Beacon Cloud API endpoints when using the Local Connector
Click the Apply button
Configure Date & Time (Required)
Select General > Date/Time Settings
Scroll to the Product Time section
Click the (Time Zone) Change button
Select the local time zone
Click the Apply button
Scroll to the Network Time Server section
Click the NTS Settings button
Enter the Network Time Server Address
It is recommended to use an Internet time server like “time.nist.gov” when using the Cloud Connector
It is recommended to use the Device Scout server’s NTS when using the Local Connector
Click the Synchronize Now button
Click the Apply button
Scroll to the Product Time section
Verify the current date and time are accurate
TLSv1.2 communication requires the printer date/time to be within five minutes of
(1) the Beacon Cloud API endpoints and (2) the Device Scout (when using the Local Connector)
Click the Apply button
Configure Web Proxy (If required)
Configuration of the web proxy is only required when the printer operates within a network environment that utilizes a web proxy to control access to the Internet.
Select Networking > Web Proxy
Enter the web proxy name, port, and user credentials
The printer must have Internet access to communicate with the Beacon Cloud API endpoints
Enter the Device Scout FQDN into the exception list when using the Local Connector
Click the Apply button
Configure Web Service Security (Required)
Select Security > Web Service Security
Select the “Enable Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS)” option
If the Trusted Sites list is empty, it is recommended to leave the list empty especially during initial deployment and testing
If sites already exist in the Trusted Sites list, then Pharos Cloud customers must add the following Trusted Sites:
App server FQDN (e.g., pharoscloud.mycompany.com) or wildcard domain (e.g., *.mycompany.com) when using a Local Device Scout as the Deployment Connector
If sites already exist in the Trusted Sites list, then Blueprint and Uniprint customers must add the following Trusted Sites:
Blueprint of Uniprint hosting server FQDN or wildcard domain
Click the Apply button
Configure Sleep Schedule (Recommended)
It is recommended to configure the printer such that it provides a highly available experience to the user, and to prevent the user from unnecessarily enduring printer wake up events. The best user experience will be provided when setting a wake and sleep schedule that best fits the typical office workers’ workday and disabling the sleep after inactivity timer.
Select General > Energy Settings
Scroll to the “Sleep Schedule” section
Click the Add button
Set the “Wake” Schedule based on your business hours
Click the Apply button
Click the Add button
Set the “Sleep” Schedule based on your business hours
Click the Apply button
Scroll to the “Sleep Settings” section
Deselect “Sleep after inactivity”
Click the Apply button
TCP Idle Timeout (As Required)
The TCP Idle Timeout value controls the number of seconds that a TCP connection is allowed to stay open. When set too short, the printer will truncate print jobs when printing lengthy or complex documents that extend past this limit. This value will need to be increased if the printer is not properly completing long run print jobs.
The default value is 270 seconds. Allowable values are 0 through 3600 seconds.
Recommended alternate value: 600
Select Network > TCP/IP Settings > Advanced
Set the TCP Idle Timeout value
Click the Apply button
Enable Color (Required)
This setting needs to be configured after securing color printers. If the setting is not configured properly after securing the printer, the printer will forcibly print in grayscale under certain conditions.
Select Copy/Print > Restrict Color
Select the Enable Color option
Click the Apply button
Home screen customization (Recommended)
Perform these steps after securing the printer.
Select General > Control Panel Customization > Home Screen Customization
Enable the Enable HP home screen if OXPd app fails to load option
Click the Apply button
